Hospital Report

by komal » Thu Feb 11, 2010 12:31 am
The report recommended that the hospital should eliminate unneeded beds, expensive services should be consolidated, and use space in other hospitals.

(A) should eliminate unneeded beds, expensive services should be consolidated, and use space in other hospitals

(B) should eliminate unneeded beds, expensive services should be consolidated, and other hospitals' space be used

(C) should eliminate unneeded beds, expensive services should be consolidated, and to use space in other hospitals

(0) eliminate unneeded beds, consolidate expensive services, and other hospitals' space used

(E) eliminate unneeded beds, consolidate expensive services, and use space in other hospitals

case of llelism
the three itmes listed below needs to be llel
eliminate unneeded beds,
expensive services should be consolidated,
and use space in other hospitals.

only E does by starting each clause with averb

Honestly speaking i dint know whether it should be should eliminate or just eliminate. But why wait for miracles to happen and ur brain to strike! :D

Move to finding the next error.

Now A , B and C each uses should @ the beginning of the sentence and again it uses should after a comma . Firstly its wordy and secondly its lacking parallelism.ELIMINATE

Left with D and E

D also lack parallelism since the correct form is eliminate, consolidate and use.

This is shown only by E

Hence I'd go with E

Hope this helps :)

I would like someone to review this question. As per MGMAT SC guide, verb recommended (bossy verb) should be used in the format

recommended+ THAT+ subject + command subjunctive. Can some one explain if there is any command subjunctive in this question? I understand the answer is E but would like to understand more about the Command subjunctives and why it is not required in this sentence.

Hi,

Subjunctive verbs are used with the verbs that express demand, request, or recommendation. There is a list of verbs with which we can only use subjunctive words. "Recommend" is one such verb that requires the use of subjunctive verb, as very clear from the explanation of its usage.

Since this sentence uses the verb "recommend", we need subjunctive verb forms here. Hence the verbs to be used in this sentence should be "eliminate", "consolidate" and "use".

Although "hospital" is singular subjects and needs singular verb forms, use of "eliminate", "consolidate" and "use" is correct in the correct answer choice E because of the presence of the verb "recommended". This is a unique feature of subjunctive verbs. They do not follow the subject-verb number agreement rule. Subjunctive verbs must be used in their root form without any suffix.

Also the subjunctive verbs follow a particular structure which is:
Demand/Request/Recommend Word + THAT + Subject + Subjunctive Verb

Use of "that" is imperative when using subjunctive verbs.
This OG question has a similar structure:

The report recommended (Recommend Word) + "that" + "the hospital" (Subject) + "eliminate (Subjunctive Verb) unneeded beds", "consolidate (Subjunctive Verb) expensive services", and "use (Subjunctive Verb) space in other hospitals."

@bhumika.k.shah: I hope now you know why we need just "eliminate" in this sentence and not "should eliminate".

Thanks :-)
Shraddha

HI Shradha,

If i interpret you correctly then the below sentence will be incorrect <because it uses SHOULD before subjunctive verb> <instead of following the format - Demand/Request/Recommend Word + THAT + Subject + Subjunctive Verb >

The report recommended that the hospital should eliminate unneeded beds, consolidate expensive services, and use space in other hospitals.

@gmatjeet: Yes. The sentence is incorrect because use of "should" before "eliminate" is incorrect.
