Which of the following, if true, best
completes the passage below?
The traditional view of Homer is that of a
blind bard who wrote down the epic poems
known as the Iliad and the Odyssey in the
eighth century B.C.E. We know now, however,
that this picture cannot be true. The language
used in the epic poems contains elements of
the Greek language dating from the twelfth to
the eighth centuries B.C.E., but the Greek
writing system was not developed until the
late seventh century, when it was used to
record clerical notes. A more accurate
statement regarding Homer, therefore, is that,
if he existed, he most likely ______________.
A. wrote the poems down in the fifth century
B.C.E., using a preexisting oral tradition of
Greek epic poetry.
B. was involved in the recording of clerical
notes in Greek in the seventh century.
C. composed the poems orally in the eighth
century and then dictated them to a scribe
in the late seventh century.
D. composed the poems orally in the twelfth
century, using a predecessor of the Greek
language.
E. composed the poems orally in the eighth
century, using elements of preexisting
Greek epic poetry.

Is the answer C ?
It is mentioned in the stimulus that Homer's poems whether written or orally composed took shape in the 8th century BCE
(from the stimulus - "used in the epic poems contains elements of the Greek language dating from the twelfth to the eighth centuries B.C.E" )
but the Greek writing system was not developed until the late seventh century
So , they could have been composed without being written and written down later

Think the stimulus mentions that it is 7th century and not 17th century ... I agree that 17th century or 900 years is stretching one's imagination too farpaes wrote:IMO E:
C : cannot be the answer. From C, it seems that the person was alive from 8th to 17th century, 900 years.
IMO E. (between the choices C and E)
Not sure totally, but what I thought is that though writing was mainly developed to take clerical notes it is not be necessary that Homer had actually used a scribe to get the poems written. He might have asked someone else (not a clerk ) who had learnt the art of writing.
But what can be definitely inferred from the passage that Homer had orally created the poetry using the existing elements of poetry.
Hence E. Let me know if I have gone wrong in my reasoning.

Why A cant be the answer.
Homer wrote the poems in 8th century is not true. Means he wrote the poems some other time.
