List Internship on Resume?

by steiny » Wed Nov 02, 2011 9:06 pm
I am having trouble determining whether one should list their college internships on their resume. The internships I have had are applicable to my current field (which I want to continue in after my MBA). Unfortunately even listing these internships takes up a decent portion of my single page and do not show off any major accomplishments that would likely overly impress the adcoms.

Please advise.

Thanks,
B

If you are not showing any major accomplishments, there's not much point in having them in. If you can get great stuff out of them, then yes.

Hi Steiny,

Please advice.
You should mention your internship with just one bullet point against it. Your full time work, your role, learning etc play more vital role. It's not just the work exp that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. Use your space to showcase these aspects than focusing heavily on internships.

Thanks for the input. My issue was that listing the internships takes up a decent proportion of the single page resume. I have accomplishments that are worth mentioning from some internships, but like a lot of college internships, a couple of my summers were spent doing the work that more senior individuals didn't want to do.

The big question is whether there is a benefit to listing internships or would the space be better served detailing accomplishment associated with my post graduation work. I can list one internship where I made decent achievements, but I don't know if those reviewing my resume will question why I selectively list some internships.

Well to get any deeper here, we would have to see your resume, because these sorts of decisions are relative. Meaning, imagine a seven page resume with every single detail of your professional and academic life. Now from this resume we would ideally cut down a one page resume. But it's very hard to say whether or not something should take space, when we don't know what else might replace it. Basically, you compare what you have and remove everything but the strongest points.

Hi Steiny,

I guess you answered your own question there :D. You can certainly list one of the internships that you feel you have made significant achievement in. You have to be selective with the space as their main focus is your post grad work. There is a space limit so people do not list almost everything and chose what they want the ad com to know. So pick internships which reflect you and your achievements well. All the best :)
