Letters of Rec: forms, actual letters, or both?

I am just trying to get some clarity on the recs. Do schools prefer recommenders fill out those forms with the questions and grids, or do they want an actual letter? Does is vary by school? The forms look fairly comprehensive and I thought that they preferred the online forms over a letter.

Any clarity would be appreciated. Thanks

Do my recommenders have to fill out your recommendation form or can they submit a letter?
A: We prefer recommenders use our form, but they may submit a letter that addresses our questions as long as they also include the evaluation grid, which can be downloaded from the hardcopy form. They must attach a business card to the letter and send it to us at our mailing address: Goizueta Business School, 1300 Clifton Rd, Atlanta, GA 30322.

Emory : goizueta FAQ section reads this.

Similar to emory all colleges for default prefer their forms to be filled.

you can check that college on college basis.

Depends on the school. Many schools have forms to fill out, some just ask for a letter. Gotta check each school's website.
