Many people suffer an allergic reaction to certain sulfites, including those that
are commonly added to wine as preservatives. However, since there are several
wine makers who add sulfites to none of the wines they produce, people who
would like to drink wine but are allergic to sulfites can drink wines produced by
these wine makers without risking an allergic reaction to sulfites.
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
A. These wine makers have been able to duplicate the preservative effect
produced by adding sulfites by means that do not involve adding any
potentially allergenic substances to their wine.
B. Not all forms of sulfite are equally likely to produce the allergic reactions.
C. Wine is the only beverage to which sulfites are commonly added.
D. Apart from sulfites, there are no substances commonly present in wine that

Actually here we are dismissing a alternate cause.

Ok let us try Denial Test on D

Apart from sulfites, there are no substances commonly present in wine that
give rise to an allergic reaction.

After denial test:

Apart from sulfites, there are substances commonly present in wine that
give rise to an allergic reaction.

So u can see that people will have allergic reaction to wines not becox of sulphur but becox of some other chemicals.
So Non-addition of sulfur does NOTHING to prevent people getting allergic reaction.

I think it is A --- question is about sulfite induced allergy; and A deals with a non-allergic sulfite substitute as preservative as an assumption

D is close but such other substances would be in all forms of wine... they would not have anything to do with sulfite induced allergy, which is the central theme...

I am unable to agree with OA as passage doesnt provide any link to natural wines.

Producer does not add any sulfite, but naturally present sulfite could cause allergy, so allergic person can not drink it.

D. Out of scope, Argument is concerned with allergy caused by sulfite only.

its E because it says that the sulfite is not suddenly existed in wine so it means the wine maker put some into the wine thus if they quit using the sulfite, the reaction allergic wont happen anymore.

The conclusion here is that many people can safely drink wines without the concern of an allergic reaction caused by sulfites because some wine makers don't put sulfites as preservatives. An assumption would strengthen the conclusion, hence

A:Possible, but does that stregnthen the conclusion, NO.
B:Out of scope. we are not concerned about the forms of sulfite that don't cause the reaction, but forms that do.
C: Huh???
D:Plausible, but here the focus of the conclusion is on safely drinking the wine(which does not contain sulfites) and not safely drinking the wine(which does not contain other allergy causing substance)
E: The winner. If this was not true, it would weaken the conclusion.

OA should be E..for the same reasons mentioned above. Premise is that some winemakers do not add any sulfites -> no allergic reaction is possible. If it can be shown that sulfites are naturally present in large amounts this argument will fall apart.

This is OG 12 question and the OA indeed is E.
I shall try to explain D & E

D. Apart from sulfites, there are no substances commonly present in wine that
give rise to an allergic reaction. That means that sulphites are present and they will cause allergyFall Apart
E. Sulfites are not naturally present in the wines produced by these wine
makers in amounts large enough to produce an allergic reaction in someone
who drinks these wines. : This is pertinent. The statement says that good wine makers do not add sulphites. it does not say they remove sulphites. That would mean that if sulphites are naturally present, they will not be removed and cause allergy.

Answer choice E

This answer supports the conclusion. "People who like drinking wine can drink the wine made by manufacturers who don't add sulphites in order to avoid an allergic reaction"

In choice D, we don't know whether there are other substances that can cause allergic reactions as this is not supported in the passage. In other words, the passage does not mention that sulphites in wines are the only cause of allergic reaction in wine drinkers

I would go with E.

The problem with D is that, it talks about allergic reactions from substances other than sulfites.

But the conclusion states that "People can drink these wines without Allergic Reaction to sulfites". (The conclusion only talks about Allergies arising out of sulfites, not from other substances). So even if you negate answer D, Conclusion holds; so D cannot be the answer.
