Dear Friends & Experts

I am planning for an MBA next fall and would like to know how good my chances are.

Academics:

Undergrad: B.Tech in Materials & Metallurgical Engineering, Batch of 2008, IIT Bombay (Mumbai, India)
CGPA 6.65/10

Senior secondary: 84%
Secondary : 91%

Won many awards and accolades such as Best Student Award, Best Singer, Principal's Medal etc. at school level.

Job Profile:

Over 3 years of work experience in Project Coordination, Contracts Management, Project Cost Control, Procurement Coordination, Operations Strategy Formulation and Organizational Development with an Indian multinational Steel company

- Handled assignments in Project Management for a huge capital integrated Steel Plant Project at India
- Diverse expsosure to Planning, Scheduling, Monitoring, Commissioning and Process Stabilization of integrated Steel Plant projects
- Worked closely with technlogy suppliers (domenstic and international) regarding technical and commercial issues, design and engineering team, project procurement team and on-site project executing construction team for scheduled completion and commissioning of India's one of the largest single location steel plant
- Worked directly with the Country Head, Projects of the firm in the Project Strategy Group
- Rated with "Performance Exceeds Expectations" for 3 consecutive years
- Started my career as a senior engineer and moved up to become deputy manager and then manager within a short span of 3 years
- Managing a team of 2 analysts

GMAT: 2 attempts
600 - Q48/V 24/AWA 5.5
560 - Q49/V20/AWA 5

I understand that I have very low GMAT scores, that too the second attempt being the lower. Is it okay to take it again or is the current score good enough with my profile to get admission in some good reputed B-school. Do you think taking a third attempt can have a negative impact on my profile?
I have selected few MBA colleges and would like to know what my chances at these colleges are:

Can I expect something in the following colleges?

1) Schulich
2) Rotman
3) EADA, Barcelona
4) Moore School, South Carolina
5) Leeds Univ B School, UK
6) Krannert, Purdue
7) Univ of Notre Dame, Mendoza School of Business, USA
8) Fuqua, Duke
9) Hough Graduate School, Florida, USA

Kindly suggest some good US B-schools where I stand a chance.

A 600 is gonna make your application really a tough one if you are aiming to get in top schools. I mean Fuqua, Mendoza... It's gonna be tough. What do you think? Can you get another 50 points more through studying? I think you might want to wait another year then, and dedicate a few months to really ripping through the GMAT.

Thanks a lot Jon for the reply.

I understand that the 600 won't land me among the top tier category, and that was the reason I went for another take on the GMAT. But, somehow, the recent attempt didn't go as per my plans. Ideally, I understand, I should and I can manage a good decent score in one more GMAT attempts. I hope, this does not reflect a bad image on my profile with 3 GMAT attempts...?

Secondly, if I assert that I WANT to go for the best B-School this current profile can take me, then what schools will I, at best, be able to make?

Thanks a lot again Frank.

In most of the cases it doesn't matter or affect one's chances of acceptance. And more than 5 does not come under most of the cases, so its still early days for you in number of attempts.

The issue is not so much how many times you take it, and adcom will look at the highest score, regardless of the number of attempts.

They don't view multiple GMAT administration negatively, only low scores.

Almost all the top schools "take" the highest score, but they see the last three. If the scores go up, they don't pay attention to the earlier scores.

The more important issue is the time that studying for the GMAT takes away from other areas of the application. If you present an otherwise strong application, adcom are not going to be concerned, but if the rest of the application looks 'rushed' that adcom may wonder at your time allocation priorities.

Your profile is pretty good. Improve your score and live your dream.

Keep posting.

breadbutterjam,
to answer you in both cases:
I did understand that the 600 wasn't what you planned :), that's why I asked if you can get higher? (and if you can you should try!) But at some point you are gonna reach your GMAT limit score. I think if you can get more it's worth it cause like I wrote getting that 650 can be a game changer, and you can take the GMAT two three more time, no problem. And I think its worth it because it'll just help your chances, and you are coming from a tough enough pool already

As for which of the above schools you could apply to with a 600, what you need to do is look at the average GMAT and 80% range of the schools, and see where your score fits to get an idea. For example Rotman's Mean GMAT score is 652, their Middle 80% range GMAT scores: 560-720. You can find the info for the other schools on the net.

Which means that you definitely have chances there, although your score is on the lower half. But nonetheless, I would definitely take the GMAT again. You took it twice. Your score is going up. I think patience is a worthwhile virtue in this case.

Hi Jon

It's been almost an year now, and as encouraged by you, I retook the GMAT.

To my delight, I have scored a 700 (Q 49 / V 36).

All thanks to you and a few good people who really stood by me for making this happen.

I now plan to apply for R 1 (may be) and R 2 this fall.

May I request you to guide me further on this.

Regards
