Victoria and Albert Museum

by GmatKiss » Mon Sep 19, 2011 6:29 am
Although it was once funded entirely by the government, the Victoria and Albert Museum was one of the first of Britain's national museums seeking support from corporations and private donors and to increase income by increasing attendance.

(A) one of the first of Britain's national museums seeking support from
(B) one of Britain's first national museums seeking support of
(C) among Britain's first national museums to seek support of
(D) among the first of Britain's national museums to seek support from
(E) among Britain's first national museums that have sought the support of

How to choose between C and D?

D IMO.

among Britain's first national museums seems to distort original meaning and also support from sounds better here.

D is incorrect.
among the first of Britain's national museums doesn't make sense.
will go with C.

IMO: D

You are correct that we need the infinitive "to seek" and we can narrow it down to C and D, so excellent work there!

In C, notice how "support of corporations" is missing an article, THE. It would need to be "the support." Furthermore, "first" is not modifying "national museums."

The meaning here is that this particular museum was one of the FIRST out of ALL of Britain's national museums do to something. D makes that clear, whereas in C, "first" modifies "national museums" implying that there was a select group of museums that were considered the "first national museums," which does not make sense.
