The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature; this stimulation sometimes results in the activation of certain biological cooling mechanisms, one of which is perspiration.

IMO D
a,b -> Subject verb agreement error... (certain spicy food -> plural, makes -> singular)
C) 'like' compares similar things and also 'they' is ambiguous..
D) Correct.. 'these foods' is mentioned instead of 'they' and 'make' is in agreement with certains picy foods...
E) 'reason' , 'because' redundant. 'they' ambiguous (people or foods)??

'they' is ambiguous. Can you please justify it?
I understand the 'like' reasoning part in the same option.
+1 for D.
The Ambiguity of "they"
Certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat because they contain a chemical ....
The pronoun "they" has two possible antecedents - spicy foods and people (both are plural , hence suitable to be used with they).
The ambiguity is - is it the people that contain a chemical , OR
is it the spicy foods that contain a chemical .
