(A) its many problems had been the recent CORRECT. We need the past perfect to indicate the earlier action - sales slump
(B) its many problems has been the recently - Recently illogically suggests that the retailer extended the sales slump
(C) its many problems is the recently - same problem as B
(D) their many problems is the recent Their incorrectly refers to retailer
(E) their many problems had been the recent same problem as D

I got A. (I was falling for B)

However, the sentence says that the retailer said:"XYZ"
Now this XYZ has to be parallel to this past tense and thus I chose past perfect.

Thanks
