Please help me with this problem.

Performing a risky maneuver that required precision flying, not only did space shuttle astronauts retrieve an orbiting satellite, it was done simultaneously while avoiding being rear-ended by a passing ultraviolet telescope

a) not only did space shuttle astronauts retrieve an orbiting satellite, it was done simultaneously while avoiding
b) non only was an orbiting satellite retrieved by space shuttle astronauts, but they also simultaneously avoided
c) an orbiting satellite was retrieved by space shuttle astronauts who also avoided simultaneously
d) space shuttle astronauts retrieved an orbiting satellite, simultaneously while avoiding
e) space shuttle astronauts retrieved an orbiting satellite and simultaneously avoided

My choice was B but the OA is E

Performing a risky maneuver that required precision flying is a modifier which modifies astronauts and thus should be placed next to them. A,B,C are wrong
retrieved and avoided should be parallel.
IMO E

IMO E
Performing a risky maneuver that required precision flying should modify space shuttle astronauts, hence A B C are out.
the problem which i found with D is that it contains avoiding...ing form should be used for ongoing action in the present....which is not the case here..
Please correct me if i am wrong..
cheers...

Performing a risky maneuver that required precision flying, (who ?????) - Makes A,B,C incorrect
and is proper in E

A, B AND C have modifier issues.

D) while with simultaneously is redundant. while-means same time. D also has meaning error.

E) CORRECT

a) not only did space shuttle astronauts retrieve an orbiting satellite, it was done simultaneously while avoiding
b) non only was an orbiting satellite retrieved by space shuttle astronauts, but they also simultaneously avoided
c) an orbiting satellite was retrieved by space shuttle astronauts who also avoided simultaneously
d) space shuttle astronauts retrieved an orbiting satellite, simultaneously while avoiding
e) space shuttle astronauts retrieved an orbiting satellite and simultaneously avoided
