A. lies the clauses that make us liable for any expenses that
The subject of the first clause(the clause of the sentence , of course) is 'clauses'. it requires a plural verb 'lie' - subject verb agreement.
B. lies the clauses that make us liable for any expenses which
The subject of the first clause(the clause of the question stem , of course) is 'clauses'. it requires a plural verb 'lie'.
Also, 'which' should be preceded by comma - incorrect.
C. lies the clause that make us liable for any expenses that
This is a very clear and short option. there is problem in the second clause of the sentence - makes is required instead of 'make' - incorrect.
D. lie the clauses that makes us liable for any expenses which
'makes' is singular, make is required. Also, 'which' should be preceded by a comma.
E. lie the clauses that make us liable for any expenses that
The correct answer - 'lie'(pl) matches 'clauses'(pl). 'make' is correct.

E
the clauses in the subject, and then the verb must be lie and make also should be in agreement with that

Why it was assumed that we will have clauses as the original intention of the author.
Why not clause as the one intended which make "lies" as one of the correct verbs. ?
To me the answer looks like "C".

Had there been 'makes' (singular) instead of make(plural), C would have been right.mukgera wrote:Why it was assumed that we will have clauses as the original intention of the author.

You have to check the subject- verb agreement at least right?
