"In terms of"

I've noticed that whenever its stated to answer "in terms of" a certain variable, it complicates the plug-in rule.

Is there a standard way to adjust the plug-in rule to account for the "in terms of" of rule? or is it dependent on the question being asked?

y multiplied by some term.
