Sportswriter: Many fans have complained loudly about the goaltender when our beloved home team lost important games during the regular season these past five years. Clearly, though, the team's offense has also played a key part in these disappointing losses. Over the past five years, the number of goals scored by the home team has been well below the league average, and further analysis indicates that the average skill level of the team's opponents has remained the same.

The boldface portion of the sportswriter's argument has which of the following functions?

A)It is the main point of the argument.
B)It is evidence that the author attempts to explain.
C)It introduces an opinion the author opposes.
D)It is an opinion that the author ultimately decides is appropriate.
E)It introduces evidence for the author's main point.
i dont think the answer is C. i think it should be E instead of C....
the bold sentence is just a premise before giving a main point with the word " clearly though"
anybody has any explanation for me please

C states that the bold face is an evidence which is not true.It is rather an opinion.
choice is between A and E.

A seems appropriate as it considers the opinion.E considers is to be an evidence, which in fact is the statement mentioned after the opinion.

hence A.

IMO: C

The boldface part states team lose was due to goaltender, this is clearly an opinion. And author disagrees with this opinion by introducing another fact/reason, decrease of offensive skill.

"die" -

Look for the hard transitions in critical reasoning. Examples are "but" "however" "on the other hand" "yet" and many more. These are very important for every type of critical reasoning except inference.

Whenever you have a hard transition everything before that is going to then be contradicted by the author's main point.

Here is an example. "Many people think that it is wasteful of energy for so many people live in the American Southwest where they have to run the air conditioning so often. However, because it costs much more to heat a home than to air condition it, a home in the Northeastern United States actually uses considerably more energy."

You can see in the example that the first portion is only stated so that it can be contradicted. It is set up in order to be knocked down.

The same through is true with the argument that you have posted. The transition here is "though." It is not as hard of a transition as "however" but we can say that what comes after the "though" is opposing what came before it.

Although I am not sure that this particular argument works perfectly. The author is not really opposing the idea of complaining about the goaltender, he is just making sure that the offense is complained about, too!

Not sure it is a great question here but C is the best answer.
