"Re-elect Adams, and you will be voting for proven leadership in improving the
state's economy. Over the past year alone, seventy percent of the state's workers
have had increases in their wages, five thousand new jobs have been created, and
six corporations have located their headquarters here. Most of the respondents in a
recent poll said they believed that the economy is likely to continue to improve if
Adams is reelected. Adams's opponent, Zebulon, would lead our state in the wrong
direction, because Zebulon disagrees with many of Adams's economic policies."

In this advertisement, the author argues that voters should re-elect Adams. To support this claim the author indicates that last year seventy percent of the state's workers have had increases in their wages, five thousand new jobs have been created and six corporations have located their headquarters in the state. Furthermore the author argues that Adam's opponent Zebulon disagrees with many of Adam's economic policies. The argument is flawed mainly because it assumes economic improvements experienced by the state are resulted from policies of Adam. However there might be other reasons which account for the economic improvements
First economic conditons in the whole region might have improved. What if in neighbor states worker's wages were increased even by a greater percent, more than five thousand jobs were created and more corporations moved to that states? In that case economic improvements in the state would be explained by the improvements of the economic situation in general in the state.
Second, the economic improvements might have caused by policies implemented before Adam's term. It is entirely possible that some economic policies need some time before a state can reap their benefits. What if before Adam significant improvements in the business infrastructure were undertaken and it would require at least a decade for those improvements to have a positive impact on the economy. In this case economic improvements experienced by the state would be attributable to earlier policies.
Apart from unsubstantiated assumptions, by stating that because Zebulon disagrees with Adam's policies Zebulon would lead the state in the wrong direction the author assumes that Adam's policies are the best ones. And it is not possible to come up with better ones. Even if Adam's policies were influential in improving the economic situation in the state, it is entirely possible that a politician can come up with better ideas. Therefore since Zebulon disagrees with Adam's policies, it is not warranted that Zebulon might not possibly improve the economic conditions of the state.
To sum up, the argument is unconvincing since it assumes that economic improvements experienced by the state are caused by Adam's policies without providing support for this claim and that since Zebulon disagrees with Adam he cannot do better. The argument might have improved if the author demonstrated direct relation with Adam's policies and economic improvements and if he refuted Zebulon's likely success on the grouns that his policies will be ineffective rather than on the grounds that they are contrary to the policies of Adam.
