Frances Perkins’ investigations

by Mayur Sand » Thu Jul 23, 2009 6:43 pm
So dogged were Frances Perkins’ investigations of the garment industry, and her lobbying for wage and hour reform was persistent, Alfred E. Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt recruited Perkins to work within the government, rather than as a social worker.

A. and her lobbying for wage and hour reform was persistent,
B. and lobbying for wage and hour reform was persistent, so that
C. her lobbying for wage and hour reform persistent, that
D. lobbying for wage and hour reform was so persistent,
E. so persistent her lobbying for wage and hour reform, that

i went for C but OA is E

Does that mean 'So X, so Y, that Z' is correct sentence structure?

Consequently, is "So X, so Y, so Z, that A" also correct?

@karmayogi,

I think so.

Idiom is "so X that Y"-> Here X is inverted. So as per the question,

FP's investigations of GI were so dogged, her(agree with possessive FP's) lobbying for wage and hour reform (was) persistent, that blah blah.

Here, "so X, so Y, so Z, that M" is correct(Parallelism). Ideally, there should be 'and' with the last "so Z" but I have seen some GMAT questions in which they maintain parallelism but avoid using 'and' if there is no ambiguity.

Thanks for response. Do you remember where you have seen such questions?

hey dont u think you need a verb in E? Had the sentence been:

so persistent was her lobbying for wage and hour reform, that

then i would have found this correct. But the absence of the verb makes this statement a dependent clause. Remember conjunctions connect 2 independent clauses.

very hard question. I choose correct one but spent too long time

we need "that" so, A and D are out

"so" in B is redundant. B is out

between C and E

we make illipsis possible(cut off "was"), we need the second phrase parallel to first phrase, so E is left

I realize that gmat do not test difficult grammar points but play logics on basic grammar. Calm down to realize logic

even for me it was either C or E, question

and now after reading E, i feel C defied parallelism. I should have picked E

Very tricky one.. I was about to eliminate ",that" because its almost always wrong.
But realsied that "So X that Y" makes sense here.

Yeps, I would agree with everyone that this was indeed a tricky one. Did not know the usage of So w, So x ,So y That z exists. Well now i know.

I am a little confused here

If we need to maintain some kind of parallelism, then why is it not in the form of "SO X & SO Y THAT"

Even if we can do without the conjunction 'AND' why do we need a comma after "SO Y". Why can't the sentence be in the form "So X,So Y THAT".

The construction "SO X, So y,THAT Z" makes "SO Y" seem like a modifier. But it does not really act as a modifier.Does it?

Ron, could u pls explain

is this an official problem, from the modern (i.e., GMAT PREP or OG) GMAT questions?

i've seen this sort of construction before, but i'd like confirmation that this problem is official (and from the aforementioned recent sources) before passing any judgment on it.
