Subject Verb Question

With its plan to create a wildlife sanctuary out of a previously unused landfill, Sweden is but one of the number of industrialized nations that is accepting its responsibility to protect endangered species and promote conservation

A. is accepting its responsibility to protect endangered species and promote
B. is accepting its responsibility for protecting endangered species and promoting
C. are accepting its responsibility to protect endangered species and promoting
D. are accepting of their responsibility to protect endangered species and to promote
E. are accepting their responsibility to protect endangered species and promote

Correct Answer : E


Can someone please explain this.

One of the + plural NOUN/PRONOUN + that + plural Verb
This is the accepted structure.

Hence AB out.

in C, are...its is wrong

D is awkward.
I do not know the exact rule why "accepting of their" cannot be used.
But it looks awkward.

To add to that, had it been "ONLY one of the nations", then you would use singular verb.
Being defeated is often only a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.
