plz solve this...

by ruplun » Sun Sep 12, 2010 4:56 am
Certain instruments used in veterinary surgery can be made either of stainless steel or of nylon. In a study of such instruments, 10 complete sterilizations of a set of nylon instruments required 3.4 times the amount of energy used to manufacture that set of instruments, whereas 50 complete sterilizations of a set of stainless steel instruments required 2.1 times the amount of energy required to manufacture that set of instruments.

If the statements above are true, each of the following could be true EXCEPT:

(A) The 50 complete sterilizations of nylon instruments used more energy than did the 50 complete sterilizations of the stainless steel instruments.
(B) More energy was required for each complete sterilization of the nylon instruments than was required to manufacture the nylon instruments.
(C) More nylon instruments than stainless steel instruments were sterilized in the study.
(D) More energy was used to produce the stainless steel instruments than was used to produce the nylon instruments.
(E) The total cost of 50 complete sterilizations of the stainless steel instruments was greater than the cost of manufacturing the stainless steel instruments.

Ans: I am confused with option C and D

should be D
C is out of scope. we dont know for sure how many set will be made.... it just compare energy...

IMO: B

Here's why...

(A) The 50 complete sterilizations of nylon instruments used more energy than did the 50 complete sterilizations of the stainless steel instruments - Could be true since we have no idea about the absolute value of the energy consumed for sterilizing the stainless steel & nylon instrument.

(B) More energy was required for each complete sterilization of the nylon instruments than was required to manufacture the nylon instruments. - The statement says that "10 complete sterilizations of a set of nylon instruments required 3.4 times the amount of energy used to manufacture that set of instruments".. Or, 1 complete sterilization took 0.34 times the energy required to manufacture those instruments. Thus, this option cannot be true.

(C) More nylon instruments than stainless steel instruments were sterilized in the study. - Could be true. No info has been provided about the no. of instruments sterilized.

(D) More energy was used to produce the stainless steel instruments than was used to produce the nylon instruments. - Again, could be true since no info has been provided regarding the energy used for production of the two types of instruments.

(E) The total cost of 50 complete sterilizations of the stainless steel instruments was greater than the cost of manufacturing the stainless steel instruments. - Yes. This fact is clearly mentioned in the statement itself...

What's the OA???

Hi all!

IMO B

Step 1: Read the question stem and identify type of question.
This is "inference EXCEPT" CR question. Therefore, we are looking for answer choice that must be false.

Step 2: Read the paragraph.

Step 3: Focus on the conclusion and read the question stem again.

Step 4: Eliminate the incorrect answer choices.
(A) it is possible.
(B)it must be false because 3.4/10 < 1
(C)it is possible. we don't know how many instruments are in each set
(D)it is possible.
(E)it is possible and out of scope.

Step 5: Read the final answer choice you've selected, and read the stem again. Either confirm the answer or eliminate it.
Answer B is correct.

Read "Comprehensive CR Guide"
https://gmatclub.com/forum/cr-guide-100473.html

Hope it helps!
Best,
Maciek

I will go with E

As cost factor has not been mentioned or discussed in the original paragraph

IMO D.

By reading the passage one cannot make out any relation between cost of manufaturing nylon instruments and cost of manuacturing stell instruments...

OA..Pls......

The answer choices don't seem correct to me. What is the source of this question?

You shouldn't be confused with C and D :)
The answer is B as the amount of energy expended in making the nylon is only .34!

IMO C there is no comparison of the numbers of sterilization of both instruments. in the passeage. It is clearly not D.
The more you suffer before the test, the less you will do so in the test! :)
