Need some help with reading comprehension

by amazingkev » Wed Dec 05, 2007 9:33 am
i'm still struggling with GMAT, especially on verbal part. In order to get a good score, I noticed that it is necessary to score at least 35 from Verbal portion.

I've been having difficulties with reading comprehension. I think I picked up my concentration level and the pace of reading, however still I am failing to get the clear picture after reading each passage because of my limited vocabs.

Many words from the passage that I don't know the meanings clearly trip me off while reading and force me to make a guess when answering questions after reading.

I found this website that shows common word that are used in GMAT test and it has around 1500 words. I thought about studying over this, however it is too much for short amount of time. Any thoughts or advice please?

Moved to reading comprehension section...

From what you've written, it seems that you have correctly identified that word comprehension is your biggest issue with RC questions. Unfortunately, this puts you at a disadvantage for the GMAT verbal section, since RC and CR passages can be really subtle and it's critical to understand the words.

I think that it will be important for you to study the list of RC words. My advice is to break down the list into flashcards, which you can review on a daily basis. It takes practice and repetition to memorize vocab.

Good luck!

i came from ground zero on reading comprehension. THe best way to do this is work with manhattan gmat reading comprehension. THey explain what to watch for as far as wrong answer. THey also taught me how to make good passages for the map. But most of all never answer a question on a hunch. Your hunch is completely irrelevant to the test maker. So have supporting reasons for your choice. Next always always always understand the question at hand fully.
