,and X and Y

by beastheart » Wed May 19, 2010 12:33 pm
Buyers at a department store have discovered that the last shipment of towels the store received was subpar in quality; the new towels are slow to dry, not very absorbent, and are harsh and abrasive

- slow to dry, not very absorbent, and are
- being slow to dry and not very absorbent, and
- slow to dry, not very absorbent, and
- slow to dry and not very absorbent, and they are
- slow to dry, not very absorbent, and that they are

Try this one, interesting problem of parallelism ?

I will go with "C" on this one.

Here's why:

I ruled out "B" and "E" first...
"B" starts with being... its awkward
"E" says ..and that they are...no need for that

Left with A, C & D

"D"...I think the extra and is awkward here.

"A" violates the rule that the "are" should be in front of each of the items in the list or just the first one (the second item in this list does not have an "are")

So we're left with C.

Not the most convincing reason to choose C but...based on POE it is what I get.

IMO C

E i think is not concise and can be ruled out for this reason.

Why not D?

Buyers at a department store have discovered that the last shipment of towels the store received was subpar in quality; the new towels are slow to dry and not very absorbent, and they are harsh and abrasive .

The sentence with C is quite awkward

Buyers at a department store have discovered that the last shipment of towels the store received was subpar in quality; the new towels are slow to dry, not very absorbent, and harsh and abrasive .

After inserting the option D, here is the sentence:

Buyers at a department store have discovered that the last shipment of towels the store received was subpar in quality; the new towels are slow to dry and not very absorbent, and they are harsh and abrasive.

I think the first "and" which is in bold is incorrect there is still a third item in the list. It becomes something like I like apples and mangoes and pineapple

However, Option C correctly uses slow to dry, not very absorbent, and , that is, a "and" for the last item in the list which is "harsh and abrasive"

Please correct me if I am wrong.[/i]

Buyers at a department store have discovered that the last shipment of towels the store received was subpar in quality; the new towels are slow to dry, not very absorbent, and are harsh and abrasive

{its a simple list, and in a list you want to make sure everything is in order}
- slow to dry, not very absorbent, and are [ needs to be everywhere in the list]
- being slow to dry and not very absorbent, and
- slow to dry, not very absorbent, and
- slow to dry and not very absorbent, and they are
- slow to dry, not very absorbent, and that they are
