Analysis of Issue
The desire of corporations to maximize profits creates conflict with
the general welfare of the nation at large

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion
stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own
experience, observations or reading.

Corporations in this day and age can be very selfish when it comes to
money and will not have the nation's benefit at heart. Many multinational
companies adopt practices that are more harmful to the nation's
economy and prove to be very profitable for the company owners.

It happens a lot with the the information technology, consumer
goods(companies like Walmart and K mart) and pharmaceutical companies .In the
technology sector ,classic examples would be companies like Oracle and
Cisco of late .Oracle and Cisco hire consultants from companies in
countries like India and Phillipines that do their development and quality
assurance with half the number of people that it would normally take and
for lower wages. In turn thecompany is shutting down the offices in the
nation which increases unemployment rates manifold and affects the
economy at large.

The pharmaceutical industry is spewing forth a lot of drugs into the
market that are not well researched and tested by the Food and Drug
Administration and are being sold as over the counter medication. The recent
recall of infants cough and cold medicine from comanies like Dimetapp
and Little Colds attest to this fact. Although these drugs appear to
treat the ailment at hand they have detrimental side effects and lead to
more patients in hospitals which drives up the insurance and health
care costs that hit the economy.

Who doesn't want money? Everybody does and corporations are no
different. With the drive to make more money and the intelligence and know-how
to achieve it they sadly do not realize that they are doing it at the
expense of the nation.
