Interest rate

by gmatguy81 » Thu Apr 08, 2010 12:11 pm
7. A higher interest rate is only one of the factors, albeit an important one, that keeps the housing market from spiraling out of control, like it did earlier in the decade.

a) that keeps the housing market from spiraling out of control, like it did earlier in the decade.
b) that keep the housing market from spiraling out of control, as it did earlier in the decade
c) that keeps the housing market from spiraling out of control, as it did earlier in the decade
d) that keep the housing market from spiraling out of control, like earlier in the decade
e) that keep the housing market from spiraling out of control, like it did earlier in the decade

OA B

I don't quite get this. I got this question from the brutal sc document. I think the answer should be C. please correct me if I am wrong.

Please underline the sentence.

IMO answer should be (B) because in the sentence, THAT will refer back to immediate preceding noun, which FACTORS.

Since, FACTORS is plural. Hence, KEEP should comes instead of KEEPS.

Hence, go with (B).

Try to remember these below rules ( collected from BTG )

1. One of the Xs that/who <plural> e.g. that's one of the birds that fly over my house at night.

2. One of the Xs <singular> e.g. one of the birds flies over the house; the other one flies past it.

3. only One of the Xs <singular> e.g. marina is only one of the girls who has ever been to india.

4. only One of the Xs that/who <plural> e.g. X is only one of the factors, albeit an important one, that keep the market from spinning out of control

5. "the" only One of the Xs that/who <singular>
e.g. marina is the only one of the girls who has ever been to india.
e.g. X is the only one of the factors that keeps the market from spinning out of control

You will see that B is a clear answer ( as per rule 4)

@subgeeth A pronoun- antecedent problem is a very complex one, especially in gmat. You will find several sentences that dont agree with even the basic rules of "pronoun reference" ; however that doesnt mean there is an error and that is when the "logic" of the sentence should be considered.

I would leave the explanation part to the Experts :)

Kindly have a look at this post, especially the reply by Stacey.

It will surely clear all your doubts!!

Thanks

Raunek.
