Question from verbal review

by schumi252 » Sat Apr 03, 2010 4:58 pm
1. Some bat caves, like honeybee hives, have residents that take on different duties such as
defending the entrance, acting as sentinels and to sound a warning at the approach of danger, and
scouting outside the cave for new food and roosting sites.
(A) acting as sentinels and to sound
(B) acting as sentinels and sounding
(C) to act as sentinels and sound
(D) to act as sentinels and to sound
(E) to act as a sentinel sounding

Can anyone explain to me the answer? detailing parallelism??

OA B

Please underline the sentence before you post!

In the sentence, you are listing 3 different duties - "defending the entrance", "acting as sentinels.." and "scouting outside the cave". In the second duty, you should not introduce an infinitive to break the parallelism. To maintain the parallelism, change "to sound a warning" to "sounding a warning" - to match with other duties.

C,D and E can be eliminated straightaway because it breaks the parallelism with other duties - "to act..."
