Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France derives from nuclear power, while in Germany it is just over 33 percent.
A. while in Germany it is just over 33 percent
B. compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent
C. whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany
D. whereas just over 33 percent of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany
E. compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33 percent

What is wrong in option D?Plz explain.
OA is C

D is not clearly stating the intended meaning of the main sentence. Also, the use of '....energy comes from....' sounds absurd.

since we are comparing similar stuff, b and e are gone. compared to is only used for dissimilar stuff.

between A and C, C is better because C uses whereas that fits in better as it serves well as a comparison word. Am i correct? any one pls confirm whether my justification is ok?

IMO D

In this example we are comparing the percent of energy used between two countries... so the two clauses have to be parallel

"over 75 percent.... whereas just over 33 percent..."

OA is C OR D.

IMO C.

IMO: energy does not come out of power, it is produced (using) power. thus D is awkward, changes meaning.
When you think you can or you cannot, you are generally correct.

I do not think 'comes from' is awkward. The original says 'derives from' and option D says 'comes from'. I don't think this changes the intended meaning. Also, the comparison is perfect in D. I'm not sure about the OA. Some say D and some say C.

First, the OA is attached in the picture below (from GMATPrep). Circled in blue square. I chose E.

Here's my question: is anyone else confused by this part of the sentence?

"Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France derives from nuclear power"

Energy produced in France derives? Excuse me?? Isn't it grammatically incorrect?
SHould be either:
"Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France is derivED from"
or
"Over 75 percent of the energy produced, France derives from" (notice the absence of "in" before France)

I understand the answer itself, but I dont understand the grammatical mistake on GMAT. Or maybe the mistake is in my brain

Yep.
SHould be either:
"Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France is derivED from"
No, because it's still coming; it never stopped.
or
"Over 75 percent of the energy produced, France derives from" (notice the absence of "in" before France)
This is just a confusing and a weird mix of tenses.
I understand the answer itself, but I dont understand the grammatical mistake on GMAT. Or maybe the mistake is in my brain
"Derives" is a more academic way of saying "comes." Replace the word and the sentence should make more sense.

"Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France comes from..."

There is no mistake.
