Group #2: Analysis of Issue
Those who are the most financially successful have worked the hardest.

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations or reading.

Some people think that the most financially successful people have worked the
hardest. Other may say that this is not necessarily true. This issue is inherently
controversial and both sides can be argued for. However, upon close
examination, one can probably find that hard work does not always necessarily
transpire into financial success. In the following discussion, I will present
different aspects to explain this in details.

First, financial success depends on many factors, one of which is hard work.
For instance, proper and adequate exposure is very essential to be financially
successful. Not all the hard workers are fortunate enough to get this type of
exposure. Consider the example of handicraft workers from some remote
village in East Africa or India. How many of their excellent creations actually get
to reach the art lovers of the world? only a counted few. If we talk about hard
work, these workers dedicate months and sometimes years to come up with
one object of artistic elegance, but they are still far away from even the
minimum financial success. Also, the element of luck is another factor which
often differentiates between individuals with comparable dedication and hard
work and brings out few winners.

Secondly, financial success is heavily dependent on the type of occupation of
an individual. As different occupations demand different expertise and offer
varying compensations, similarly, these occupations also indicate the possible
extent of financial success. For instance, for a Research Scientist, engrossed
in fundamental research, hard work is an absolute necessity. In fact, to be a
Research Scientist, one needs to be very hard working from the very beginning.
However, financial success is seldom achieved by researchers, despite a lot
of hard work. The reason lies in the nature of their occupation. Research work
can bring financial success only when it is commercialized. Only a counted few
of all fundamental research work conducted worldwide get the needed
exposure and are able to be commercialized. Consequently, only a counted
few researchers can actually be financially successful in life.

Added to the previous example, the mention of artists will be very relevant here.
An artist, working with fine arts or sculpture, devotes his entire life to create
masterpieces. Although almost all of these artists do immense hard work,
spanning for their entire life, only very few of them are lucky to enjoy financial
success during their lifetime. If we consider the example of Vincent Van Gogh,
he was a legendary artist and his paintings are valued at millions of dollars
today. But, he was not lucky enough to feel or enjoy this success while he was
creating his masterpieces. Only after he died, his works gained huge
recognition. And this not only applies to Van Gogh, but to a majority of artists all
over the world.

Even after considering all the above factors, there are still few people for whom
financial success has transpired almost directly from their dedication and hard
work. However, they are so few in numbers that they can probably be
considered as an exception to the general rule. In conclusion, it may be said
that hard work is definitely needed for any success, be it financial or otherwise,
however, it does not always convert to financial success.
