What's wrong with the verbal statement

by manjus_mailme » Tue Feb 16, 2010 3:54 pm
Toy stores of the same type often succeed despite the fact that they are next to each other; one reason is suggested by the behavior of consumers, who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons between products can be made at several stores than in an area in which comparisons can be made at only one or two stores

The answer choices are

A. Toy stores of the same type often succeed despite the fact that they are clustered next to each other; one reason is suggested by the behavior of consumers, who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons between products can be made at several stores than in an area in which comparisons can be made at only one or two stores.
B. If clustered next to each other, one reason that retail stores of the same type succeed is suggested by the behavior of consumers, who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons between products can be made at several stores than in an area in which comparisons can be made at only one or two stores.
C. If clustered next to each other, one reason that retail stores of the same type succeed is suggested by consumers who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons between products can be made at several stores than those who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons can be made at only one or two stores.
D. The fact that there are consumers who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons between products can be made at several stores than in an area in which comparisons can be made at only one or two stores is suggestive of one reason, if clustered next to each other, retail stores can succeed.
E. The fact that there are consumers who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons between products can be made at several stores than in an area in which comparisons can be made at only one or two stores suggests one reason retail stores can succeed despite being clustered next to each other.

Why is answer choice E not correct and A is correct. What is the rule that is to be followed here?If anyone understands plas let me know.

[correct]

B. If clustered next to each other, one reason that retail stores of the same type succeed is suggested by the behavior of consumers, who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons between products can be made at several stores than in an area in which comparisons can be made at only one or two stores. [what is clustered next to each other? this statement makes it look as if the reason is clustered next to each other. Eliminated]

C. If clustered next to each other, one reason that retail stores of the same type succeed is suggested by consumers who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons between products can be made at several stores than those who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons can be made at only one or two stores. [same as B. Eliminated!]

D. The fact that there are consumers who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons between products can be made at several stores than in an area in which comparisons can be made at only one or two stores is suggestive of one reason, if clustered next to each other, retail stores can succeed. [there means where?? there is a demonstrative pronoun and hence needs to point to something. Eliminated!]

E. The fact that there are consumers who would rather shop in an area in which comparisons between products can be made at several stores than in an area in which comparisons can be made at only one or two stores suggests one reason retail stores can succeed despite being clustered next to each other. [same reason as D. Eliminated!]

Stupid Question!

Shouldn't "comparisons between products can be made at several stores" be "comparisons among products can be made at several stores" ?

What is being compared in this statement ?

yupp i accept the question is constructed in bad taste, but considering that appears in all the options, you need to choose the best one out of the worst (provided the source is credible!)

BTW what is the source of this question?

sumanr84- LOL!! i accept this is a long one. But such full underlined sentences are easy to crack than just 2- 3 words underlined. They are the toughest to crack :)
