prep questions

If the ice of Greenland and Antarctica were to melt, the sea level would rise at least 100 feet or more.

A. ..

B. Were the ice of Greenland and Antartica to melt, the sea level would rise at least 100 fet.

C. Was the ice of Greenland and Antarctica to melt, the sea level would rise at least 100 fet or more.

D. If the ice of Greenland and Antarctica was melting, the sea level would rise at 100 feet.

E. Should the ice of Greenland and Antarctica melt, the sea level would rise at least 100 feet or more.

==> wouldn't A be appropriate over B?

Britain cut its base lending rate to its lowest level in 22 years, giving a boost of confidence to investors and it signaled that the European rates will continue to move down even as they move up in the United States.

A. ..

B. investors and signaling that the rates would continue to move down in Europe even as they move up

C. investors, which signaled that the rates in Europe would continue to move down despite the fact of their moving

D. investors, and it signaled that European rates would continue to move down in spite of their moving

E. investors, signaling that the rates in Europe will continue to move down just as they move up

==> I had a difficult time choosing btn B and E (which is wrong), but in E, wouldn't.."signaling..." be appropriate to indicate a cause and effect? (because they cut the lending rate, as a result, it signaled..."

Atleast 100 feet is good enough -- the extra "or more" is unnecessarily
wordy. Hence B would be preferred over A

The cut in base lending rate does 2 things -- giving boost of confidence
to investors AND signaling that rates will go down.

B correctly uses AND to denote this parallel structure.

E incorrectly links the 2 clauses and leads to confusion -- is the
signaling a result of the cut in base lending rate or is it due to
boost of confidence.

No it wouldn't

As atleast would mean atleast 100 or more. Why keep the unnecessary more ? A - Eliminate .

C.and E ask a question instead of referring to hypothetical situation.

D. was melting and would rise....lack of parallelism!

Hence B

A) if (simple past verb) then (would/could have )..is correct idiom but here have is missing...so eliminated

c) in hypothetical case we always prefer plural verb

d) same as a and c

e) should is incorrect here

only B survives
