If you explain the reason for all to be wrong,it would be easier for everybody to put their reasons.In my opinion choice A looks ok.

B, C and E are out because of the ambiguous pronoun reffrence 'them'...... it is referring either companies or core businesses and hence is not clear.....

D is too wordy..... thereby and by... makes it awkard
