Artificial intelligence emerged during the late 1950's as an academic discipline based on the assumption that computers are able to be programmed to think like people.

(A) are able to be programmed to think like people
(B) were able to be programmed to think as people
(C) can be programmed to think as people can
(D) could be programmed to think like people
(E) are capable of being programmed to think like people do

IMO : D

A. 'able to be' is not correct, passive constr
B. Wrong tense, as is incorrect, passive contr
C. Its an assumption so we cannot be sure - can usage is not proper here
D. Correct
E. 'are capable of being' - fully eligible for quick rule out

INCORRECT : Awkward sentence construction

(B) were able to be programmed to think as people
INCORRECT : Awkward sentence construction

(C) can be programmed to think as people can
INCORRECT : Tense is not consistent with the tense of the sentence

(D) could be programmed to think like people
CORRECT : Consistence with the Tense of the sentence


(E) are capable of being programmed to think like people do
INCORRECT : 'being programmed' is generally considered to be wrong
