You certainly do not have to be a math expert when it comes to the GMAT! The GMAT tests only a limited set of subjects, which are equivalent to early highschool level math subjects (Algebra, Geometry, etc.).

With the right preparation you can definitely ramp up your skills and do just fine on the test. Check out the GMAT Resource Wiki, https://www.beatthegmat.com/wiki/

If you look in the recommended books section, take a look at the Kaplan GRE & GMAT Math Workbook. This is a nice book to study if you need to brush up on fundamentals.
