Albert, Becky and Claire apply for research grants for the government. If each has a distinct probability for success, 2/5, 1/3 and 5/6 respectively, What is the probability that Albert and Becky will receive the grant but Claire wont?

a. 11/6
b. 7/12
c. 1/9
d. 1/45
e. 1/90

Answer D
Probability of Claire not getting grant is 1- probability of Claire getting grant = 1-5/6 =1/6

Hence probability of A and B getting grant but not C is 2/5*1/3*1/6 = 2/90 = 1/45

Hence D
