MGMAT Toughie. Counterfeiting.

Today, despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than it was at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.

A)Today, despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than it was at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.

B)Despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers today, counterfeiting is more difficult than it was at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.

C)Despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.

D)Today, despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit at the time of the Civil War.

E)Today, because of widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than it was at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.

---- introduces Wrong comparison ... than (it was) at the time of the Civil

D)Today, despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit at the time of the Civil War. ------- introduces awkward construction ...than when it was

E)Today, because of widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than it was at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit. -------- WRONG "Because" doesn't make any sense

I'm confused between A & B ...but will go with A ...because TODAY is emphasizing on that "Today, counterfieting is more difficult than it was ..."

With B, "today" gets lost.... and I know I'm lost tooo :)

IMO A.

A)Today, despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than it was at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.
Correct.

B)Despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers today, counterfeiting is more difficult than it was at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.

Today should be part of the main clause....not the introductory modifier....as introductory modifier says that tech is available today and original question said that counterfeting is difficult today.

C)Despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.
Today is missing....

D)Today, despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit at the time of the Civil War.
Wrong Comparsion: Today compared to when it was....

E)Today, because of widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than it was at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.
Changes Meaning....despite and because are opposite to each other.

My answer: B. Compared to A, this has one less comma, making it less clumsy
C: has no subject to compare "at the time of the Civil War" with.
D&E: changes meaning.

I would go with A, since eliminating the phrases between the sentences makes this choice more coherent than B.

IMO A...

Wrong Comparisons are being run. Counterfeiting is being compared to counterfeiting at some time. Counterfeiting today should be compared to the counterfeiting then.

C)Despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.

Same error as B

D)Today, despite widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit at the time of the Civil War. Misplaced

E)Today, because of widely available technology such as high-resolution scanners and printers, counterfeiting is more difficult than it was at the time of the Civil War, when it was estimated that one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.

Because is incorrectly used here... Despite has to be used.
trying for a perfect score... 800..

@goelmohit's arguments are quite convincing
