Remember this sqrt(x^2) = |x|

Stmt I

h^2 = 36

|h| = 6 which means h can be -6 or +6

INSUFF

Stmt II

h^2 + 12h = -36
h^2 + 12h +36 = 0

H^2+6H+6H+36=0
h(h+6) + 6(h+6)
(h+6) (h+6)
h=-6

SUFF

Choose B

Hope this helps!

its gmat tells u that u should have unique answer. that means for a situation to be sufficient it should give u one and only one value of h.

case (1) h=+6 also h=-6 both are different so NOT SUFFICIENT
case (2) h=-6 and h=-6 note that both the values in this case are the same i.e. -6 so B IN ITSELF IS SUFFICIENT

We need to determine the value of h.

Statement One Alone:

h^2 = 36

We can solve the equation as follows:

h^2 = 36

√(h^2) = √(36)

|h| = 6

h = 6 or h = -6

Since there are two different values for h, statement one alone is not sufficient to answer the question. We can eliminate answer choices A and D.

Statement Two Alone:

h^2 + 12h = -36

We can solve the equation as follows:

h^2 + 12h = -36

h^2 +12 h + 36 = 0

(h + 6)(h + 6) = 0

h = -6

Since there is only one value for h, statement two alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Answer:B
