The way (1) is written, it is telling us that z is closer to 10 than "x is to 10".
I got this question on my gmatprep and it was along the lines of
z is closer to 10 than it is to x, which is sufficient and would yield the
answer A.
If we go with the way (1) and (2) are as above, then my vote would
be E
1 - insufficient. We just know z is somewhere in the middle between
x and 10. Take {6,7,10} and {6,9,10} as samples and you'll see that
the average can be > or < than 10
2 - insufficient. Plug in samples {0.5, 2.5, 10}, {1.5, 7.5, 10}
1 and 2 together, again insufficient.
