butter

Though margarine was introduced as a supposedly healthful alternative to butter, recent studies suggest it is as harmful or worse than butter.

a it is as harmful or worse than butter
b it is just as harmful or even worse than butter
c that it is as harmful as or worse than butter
d it is as harmful as if not worse than butter
e that it is as harmful if not worse than butter

We need "that" here. Eliminate A, B & D

correct idiom is as harmful as

Therefore C.

In E - if clause is conditional therefore not required.

a it is as harmful or worse than butter

incorrect Idiom: need to use: as X as Y

b it is just as harmful or even worse than butter
same error as above.

c that it is as harmful as or worse than butter
Correct usage: as harmful as

d it is as harmful as if not worse than butter
Wrong usage of idiom.

e that it is as harmful if not worse than butter
same as above.

@ logitech

i guess you surely know what is subjunctive but if you insist...

subjunctive expresses "possibility", therefore it is found in

1)clauses begining with if ,though,as though etc..

2)verbs expressing some kind of wish, demand, proposal, desire etc

Always a base form of verb is used with a "that" clause

words that can be use with subjunctive that verb clause:

advise,advocate,ask,beg,decide,decree,demand,desire,dictate,insist,intend,mandate,order,propose,request,require,esolve ,suggest,urge,hope.
