phrase to equation translation

by mathewmithun » Mon Jun 18, 2012 8:03 am
I always get confused with such phrases while translating question containing them to equations. I am summing them up with my understanding, pls correct me and pls add more of such phrases to this post if any other members can thinks of:

1. a times as many x as y ==> x=ay
2. x has a times as many as y ==> x=ay
3. n times as much x as y ==> x=ny
4. x is n times as much as y ==> x=ny
5. x has n times more than y ==> x=ny+y

I could come up with only 5. A sincere request to other members and experts to keep this post live by adding more such phrases, their translation to equations and their verification(by experts). I bet many of us get caught up with these issues.
