Percent problem..from DS 1000 series

by mehravikas » Sun Jun 01, 2008 12:23 am
S1-17 At a certain university, if 50 percent of the people who inquire about admission policies actually submit applications for admission, what percent of those who submit applications for admission enroll in classes at the university?

(1) Fifteen percent of those who submit applications for admission are accepted at the university.
(2) Eighty percent of those who are accepted send a deposit to the university.

Both the statements together a sufficient to answer the question.

As we need to find the actuall enrolled students.Hence,15% of accepted then again 80% of those 15% who actually paid the fees.

do let me know what's the actual answer
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

You will be surprised to know the answer, it's 'E'. I think the answer should be 'C', because statement 1 tells us only the number of students who are accepted at the university after submitting their applications.

I think the question makes a difference between -

1. Enroll and admission acceptance (statement 1)
2. Enroll and send a deposit (statement 2)

Since they are different things, that's why the answer is 'E'.

I am just guessing, at the first attempt I thought the answer would be 'C'.

That's not a realistic GMAT question. If someone submits a deposit, do they enrol? Hard to say. The GMAT is *never* so ambiguous. Leave this question and move on, is my advice.

I agree with Ian, this question is wacky. As it's written, the answer has to be E, since neither statement says anything about enrolling in classes. It's perfectly plausible that students who are accepted won't enroll, or that a student who makes a deposit may not end up enrolling after all.
