Order of OG - Please help

by crescendo85 » Sat Feb 13, 2016 11:03 pm
Hello
I have Og 12, Og 13 and latest OG 2016
I also have OG verbal and quant review 2nd edition and the latest 2016 edition.

Which order shall I start ?

I have list of new questions in OG 2016 as compared to OG 13 and also have new questions in OG 13 as compared to OG 12 from internet. Not sure on reliability though. Any links would be appreciated.

I also have list of new questions in Verbal and Quant review 2016 as compared to 2nd edition Verbal and Quant review.

Please advise the efficient approach. Thanks

Hi crescendo85,

Since it sounds like you're just beginning your studies, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can download 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 4 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Thanks Rich.
I have actually been studying for more than a month now. Finished Manhattan SC and CR as well as Powerscore CR bible. Am working on RC now and then will focus on quants. Exam is in 2 months and aim is above 700. I gave one MGMAT and got 610. I think once I get done with quant and RC, I can get it to 650+. I want to focus on OG and other questions once I have done all the theory. I have been doing some questions from Veritas question bank and Kaplan question bank after every theory I am completing (apart from questions in Manhattan books). My accuracy in SC and CR is around 70-75% overall, and i am looking to improve it by practising.

Given i want to start OG soon, I wanted to know whats the best order.
Aim is to do OG and GMAT Prep next month. Thanks

Hi crescendo85,

If it's been a few weeks since you took that CAT, then you should plan to take another FULL-LENGTH CAT (with the Essay and IR sections) sometime soon. Once you have that score result, you should post back here and we can talk about what you should focus on during the remainder of your studies.

Many Test Takers who use a 'book-heavy' study approach tend to get 'stuck' at a particular score level, so you have to be careful about focusing too much on book-study.

1) What is your exact Test Date?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

I took this CAT last week only and have been studying hard since then. I intend to take another CAT in 2 weeks once am done with quant and RC.
Exact date is 29th April and planning to apply this year (depending on score)

Thnx

Hi crescendo85,

With an April 29th Test Date, you actually have closer to 11 weeks of study time, which is considerable. In that way, you have a bit of time to 'play around' with your studies a bit. If you find that your scores haven't improved in 2 weeks, you'll still have plenty of time to make some meaningful adjustments to your overall study plan.

When you say that you plan to apply this year, do you mean sometime in the next couple of months or later on in September/October?

Hi crescendo85,

Since you won't be applying for another 7 months, you have plenty of time to work on this entire process; that extra time, if needed, will allow you to retake the GMAT and craft some really pointed applications. Starting this far 'ahead' in the timeline is a smart choice. You should continue to study as you see fit for the next couple of weeks, then report back here once you have your next CAT score.

There's no magical order that will work best for everyone, but bear in mind that there is significant overlap between the most recent version of the Official Guide and older versions. So focus on the 2016 edition, and do the questions online. Make sure that you're not simply grinding through questions to get through them. Really dissect the problems. Review them a second time. Make notes to yourself about strategic adjustments you can make. Use other resources if you need to work on fundamentals. Take intermittent practice tests. If you get to the point where you've thoroughly dissected the Official Guide, then feel free to move on to the quant/verbal supplements for additional practice. (My feeling is that the supplements contain, on average, lower quality questions than the Official guide.)
