i was confused about the second verb..
are u certain with the second verb ??

SEE IT THIS WAY

One of the scientists who have attacked this problem is great

Here "is" is modifying "one of ............"

this is similar to
john is great=> where john = one of scientists who have done something (WHO goes with scientists hence plural HAVE)
