Answer E

using military equipment as a method of protection. It is tool for protection - Eliminate A and B
as a protection of - akward - Eliminate D
Protecting - akward - Eliminate C

i would also go with C,

comma indicates a suborndinate clause is best defined with the use of a gerund protecting which clearly modifies animal-hide shields.

However, i would go with E if there was no comma before "to protect". using to after a comma is right or wrong ??
