A - incorrect, sounds as if "scientists" were "based on accounts"
B - awkward use of an -ing form and "writer" is singular whereas in the original sentence there is a plural form
C - redundant and awkward
D - awkward and "they" is ambiguous", it might refer to "accounts" and to "writers"
E - the best option
