nth digit to the left?

by orel » Sat May 15, 2010 12:30 pm
Hello,

I have a language barrier problem in the following question:

"What's the 23rd digit to the left of the decimal point in the decimal representation of 1/7?

We think of 1/7 as "1 divided by 7" and use long division to get:

1/7 = .142857142.... "

in this: 1/7 = .142857142.... the question asks for the 23rd division to the left or right?

Please explain why it should be correct to say "nth digit to the left", and not right? I see it as 23rd digit to the right from the decimal point. May be it should be read as 23rd digit to the left to the decimal point?

Please help!

The question was taken from the post by Stuart Kowinski.

Hi!

That was purely a mental typo by me - it should have been "to the right", not "to the left".

Thanks!
