[Grockit]: Nobel Prize

by anantbhatia » Wed Oct 13, 2010 4:27 am
Considering all of the scientists who have been awarded the Nobel Prize, perhaps none is more lauded as the chemist Mendel, who pioneered the study of several new elements and paved the way for some of the great discoveries of the modern era.

perhaps none is more lauded as

perhaps none was more lauded as

it may be that none is more lauded than

maybe none is more lauded than

perhaps none was more lauded than
OA: E

confused btw D & E. D looks more appropriate as he is still lauded. The only problem is with maybe.
More than is correct. So discard A and B

C is wordy and it has no antecedent.

I am confused between D and E and somehow felt E is correct. The reason why I felt "Was" is correct is:

Past..........................................................Present
----------------------------------------------------|------------------------->Timeline
scientists awarded the.............................chemist Mendel
Nobel Prize...............................................(still more lauded)
(stays in Past to present)

So he is still lauded but here the subject is "other scientists" who are in Past. I think my reasoning is correct.

Hi Shovan.. could you draw on ms-paint or something and post the timeline thing here. That might help.

I think that The scientists who have been awarded in past are considered. I agree he is still lauded but the considered scientists were not as he is.

:) That's kind of aligning ur thoughts to the OA. I recently did a Kaplan SC where it was pointed out that if something is still important, then use present tense as in:-

The invention of telephone is important because....

'Perhaps' is more formal than 'may be'.

Sentence is actually comparing 'Mendel' with all other chemists who received prize in past. Therefore, you can not use 'is' and you have to use 'was'.

E is correct here

Not a particularly good question. Just posting to follow this.

Not convinced at all. was lauded can be correct only if the scientists were lauded only in their lifetimes. If that is indeed the intended meaning, it is too much of a stretch. Having said that, perhaps is definitely better suited than maybe.

Let us see if an expert / fellow member can help us out.

Either here or in gmatclub, the difference has been discussed. In my notes, I mentioned that when I see both "perhaps" and "maybe", "perhaps" is preferable in GMAT. I have not seen a question where I need to choose between "perhaps" and "maybe" and "maybe" took the award.

Nonetheless, expert opinion is most welcome.
