a) no ambition excepting than to see whether
b) other ambition excepting to see if
c) ambition other than to see whether
d) other ambition but that of to see whether
e) ambition excepting to see if

In my opinion it is C.

I grouped "...with no great seriousness or dedication" together. Because the original sentence had excepting, I figure the sentence needs a word that relates to the word "excepting."

I was split between A, C, D...then I wittled it down to C and D....then I chose C.

C seems right, we need "whether" here. out of A, C & D, C is concise & clear
