New Technology.

by sumittaneja009 » Fri Dec 12, 2008 4:35 am
Analyst: The pace of technological development brings a constant stream of new devices to the market, and many of them enjoy commercial success. But announcing new technology too soon after the introduction of a successful device can backfire. Once consumers hear about the new device, they may stop buying the one currently on sale. So, if a company wishes to announce the upcoming sale of a new device, it should wait until purchases of the old device have begun to decline.

Which of the following, if true, would best support the analyst's main assertion?

A) New technology often becomes less expensive after an initial surge in sales.
B) Media outlets, such as television programs and magazines, often report on the planned introduction of new devices while the sales of old devices are still strong.
C) Many consumers are unable to determine whether new technology is superior to current technology.
D) Surveys have shown that some consumers make only one or two technology purchases per year, whereas others make more frequent purchases.
E) Consumers tend to be loyal to technology companies whose products they enjoy using.

OA is B Can someone please explain?

Main:
it should wait(to announce) until purchases of the old device have begun to decline.

why?
they may stop buying the one currently on sale

(we want to maximize revenue)

(A) announcement? far out of scope, CROSS OFF
(B) ok, sounds good
(C) not mentioned anyway CROSS OFF
(D) "whereas others" this statement gives us almost no information CROSS OFF
(E) what? loyality? CROSS OFF

IMO (B) supports argument and conlusion. It ensures that consumers recognize the announcement.

...OA? Is my Argumentation right?

Main assertion here is...companies need to wait for a new product announcement if they want to make more money from the exising products. And we are asked to find one that gives support to this assertion.
This one is a bit tricky with the question statement and the alternatives given. To find a right alternative, we need to look at the supporting premises more closely. Why the company can't get more money if it announce early? It's because if consumers know that there will be a new one coming, they'd stop buying the existing one. Here, the analyst is making an assumption that consumers do prefer new ones and will NOT buy the exising if the announcement of new product is made TOO soon.

Only B stays in line with analyst's assertion. At least companies can utilize the magazines and programs in communicating with consumers. If companies understand that the sale of the existing product still is high, then they simply do not let the magazines and programs hold the articles or news on the new products.
