need some advice on school selection

by RBBmba@2014 » Mon Sep 22, 2014 3:46 am
Hi mbaMission,
As far as my research goes, for MBA applicants with RE focus, UCLA has got pretty strong real estate program (I know there are other schools as well in the top 20 with strong or may be stronger RE focused MBA curriculum, but I'm considering it along side those) . However, I've some dilemma in locking it for my apps mostly because of the following -

I don't want to be in Cali post-MBA. Rather I want to be in the South or East Coast, preferably Texas/Georgia(Atlanta)/North Carolina etc.

For a UCLA MBA grad, what are the prospects/chances of getting RE consulting job in East coast or South in the firms such as CBRE,C&W,JLL (and/or in some MC firms, with strong business in RE field, such as Deloitte,PwC,E&Y,McKinsey) ?
If coming out from UCLA, I say that I wanna have a posting in any of the above mentioned states then will that become a hindrance and will they gonna push me into their West coast offices?

So, bottom-line is that considering the above, should I go ahead with UCLA application ?

Would much appreciate your feedback on this!

Looking forward to your thoughts. Thank you.

Hi there,

Certainly it can be even EASIER to make connections right there locally during b-school, but that said it is super common to move around to various regions after graduating for specific jobs! The best thing to do is really do your research by school-- look at where grads do go and what companies etc; ask q's of the career services offices along these lines; even consider speaking with recruiters at companies you'd be interested in for their take on it. And/or-- look at NYC schools, or schools in the South, or elsewhere if you feel those connections would be valuable! Lots to consider. Good luck!

Hi Jen,
Thanks for raising some good points here. Will research those options although, let me tell you that I've already gone through some of those routes but didn't get MUCH broader perspectives on this concern.
Yes, I'd be applying to other schools as I've mentioned in my earlier post.

But could you please be specific to my questions as mentioned in the above post ?

Look forward to hear from you.Thank you!

Hi there,

Happy to help as best as I can! Though... you are specifically asking about your chances of specific jobs at specific companies in specific regions.... that's not really something I can definitively assess! I can't claim personal expertise in the RE industry; my primary expertise is in MBA admissions in this message board facilitator role, (and also in marketing, brand management, general management/operations, for-profit education, & international work experience over my career), and while I can provide some advice on schools known for RE, in terms of hiring possibilities at specific companies, the two main ways to assess/estimate possibilities are

1) info from the school (UCLA in this instance)-- review specific companies and roles that recent grads have gone into-- much of this is readily available by searching 'employment statistics' or 'hiring profiles' for that school, and/or anything you'd like to know that you can't find, I encourage you to contact the admissions and/or career services office at UCLA and ask them directly. If you'd like to be put in touch with a recent alum in a role like that you're interested in, at a company you are interested in, maybe in a REGION you are interested in... ask!

2)info from those companies-- you can contact HR/recruiters at these companies and ask for more info; potentially set up informational interviews to do more research into your questions-- and I often encourage this for MBA applicants anyway-- the more research you can do NOW about your post-MBA career steps, the better... both for your own benefit career-wise, and also for when you inevitably get pressed on this in say, an interview situation. ;)

My general overall gut would be to still pursue the UCLA app... IF you could see yourself there. But I encourage you to research via the above mentioned channels and see how YOU feel about the school as well, and what info you find out.

Hope that helps in some way!

Thanks Jennifer. Will do accordingly, however I'd be curious to see the result of your recommendation through second channel (re Company HR)!

Will return and let you know as I get some tangible information :-)
