Need dire help, dropped score by 200!

by gmatplayer » Thu Oct 15, 2009 9:00 am
It was most humiliating and demoralizing day for me yesterday. I got 470 in real Gmat. Q36 & V19

I have started my prep with 530 Q48 V16
Then gradually improved in following manner

530 GPREP-1
540 MGMAT
570 MGMAT
580 MGMAT
590 MGMAT
640 GPREP-2
670 MGMAT
670 MGMAT

I never got less than 48 in Q in any of GPREP and always got 45 to 48 in MGMAT Q.
Verbal I started with 16 then 26, 26, 28, 36, 33

I am humiliated by the fact that I couldn't even match with my lowest score without prep. During the test though I did have some tough questions in both sections, I did not think I am doing that bad.
I started with real nice in AWA and used all necessary strategies to use important words and blah blah... finished them in time with 5 min to check for each.

However I do remember in Q that I am getting some cumbersome calculations type tricky questions. Although I was about 3-4 min lagging in mid of that section, I increased my speed & then solved all with just one guess in between. In V as usual, I could not figure out whether or not I am doing good or "that bad". Still one thing from practice experience I learned that I can come back anytime in V to have decent score.

One thing I would like to mention is that before the test, when I called test center & asked for documents they need. They said driving license & a credit card. But when I arrived there they said they need passport only. So I had to drive back to my hotel, which was a mile from center & took passport to center. I am not saying that all this affected me in bad way because I still had 15 left after brining passport till deadline 4.28pm. But it could have affected in subconscious way...well, I don' know.

Now, I am going to try again. This time I going to emphasize on one thing only - timing strategy. But I do need help from moderators...what kind of change in strategy you recommend? If any.
And how do you keep yourself motivated after getting a shocking score in first attempt.

Now it has become very personal for me, I need to prove myself that I can get a decent score, which is close to 700

Apart from abaove, few of my other questions are?

Since I need more questions, how much do I need to wait to get fresh Gmatprep?

Will resetting MGMAT (6) help me? (I would surly like to do much in GMATPREP only)

Are there tests available close to Real GMAT than MGMAT?

Sorry to hear about your disappointing experience. I think that your re-take strategy is absolutely spot on--focus on your timing. It sounds like your early timing issues disrupted the pace for the remainder of your test. Simply fixing that should do a lot in improving your score.

Check out the GMAT Resources section of this site for some pacing tips.

Good luck!

Question

Thanks Eric. I will surely use these resources to prepare myself. I have following two questions about 2nd attempt:

1. I have used following material so far

OG12 (about 3 times)
OG Verbal (about 3 times)
Princeton (about 1.5 times)
Barrons (Once only)
MGMAT all 6 tests (Once)
MGMAT SC book (Once)
GMATPREP 1 & 2 (Many times to get about Q49, V30)

So, which good remaining tests/book are left for me?
I am planning to reset all 6 MGMAT; that will give me quiet a few good problems.
I can still go for free veritas & Kaplan tests(Not even touched). But in order to succeed I need something fresh material. Please suggest me something. Is 800score any good? I read that they have something called pacemaker to tell test taker exact question number he should be on during the test.

2.Do you reccommend to guess (educated) during the test, just to maintain my pace? Or to increase speed when I am lagging in time. I observed from past tests that if I increase speed too much I lose on accuracy.

I can't thank much to you or any moderator who have helped me with questions so far.

FYI: I got 5.0 in AWA, which I don't think too bad, considering one of my AWA was real good & the other not so much.

Hey man, sorry to hear about your experience. I would definitely think that your whole ordeal with the passport may have thrown you off.

As for 800score, i've done one of their practice tests for verbal and quant and really like them. They record your pacing for each question and for Q, categorize what kinds of problems you got wrong. I would recommend taking them. I think it could help you pinpoint your pacing problems.

I'm taking the Veritas class right now, and one of the teachers' (99th%Gmat) strategy was to doing maybe 40 problems at a time, go over them thoroughly, and keep record of how long each problem took him. He'd then see what kind of problems took him the longest, figure out how to reduce his time, and also make sure he learned the concepts behind the questions he got wrong (or got right for the wrong reasons).

Take a look at the Kaplan books, they are definitely worth the investment if you continue your self prep.

With regard to pacing, it really depends on the individual, but I normally recommend that people keep a consistent pace for all questions on the test. That was a strategy that worked for me personally. The problem with a variable pacing strategy (more time for difficult problems, less time for easier problems) is that it becomes challenging to keep track in your mind how much time has elapsed on your test. Plus, you don't want to be distracted about thoughts of timing when you're trying to focus on your GMAT!

Good luck!
