Need advice on admissions process

by aditya21587 » Sun Jul 31, 2016 12:23 pm
Hi Sameer,

I request your advice on my MBA admission process. I got a 730 in GMAT (April) and I am preparing for the admission process. I am an IT professional, 29 years of age, and on deputation in the US since Feb 2014. The one thing that I'm pretty firm about before diving into the admission process is that I want to do my MBA from India only. The reason is that I want to work based out of India in future and do not want to spend the huge admission fees required in international B-schools.

Other than that, I have a few things on which I'd like to seek your advice, like -

1) The colleges in India that I have a chance of getting into (IIMA, IIMB, ISB, Great Lakes are primarily in my mind).
2) Whether to apply in Round 1 or Round 2 of the admissions.
3) Preparing for the admissions process - (profile / essay / interview)

Could you please help me out with this .... and also let me know what details you require from me?

Thanks and Regards,
Aditya

Hi Adithya,
Good question. Having decided where you want to work drives your decision to do an MBA quite significantly and as such, I think you have thought well. Given your background, I would say apply early (Round 1) to the highest ranked colleges you can - ISB and IIM being obvious choices. If you write your essays well, you will find it relatively easy to prove your value to the admissions committee. In case your Round 1 applications don't come through, you have time for the other colleges in Round 2.
In terms of preparation, start now - preparing transcripts, sending GMAT score, meeting with potential recommenders and researching courses, companies and alumni from the respective Business School. Start with you long term goal, work backwards to your short to medium term goals and how an MBA will help you get there. Don't worry about the essays now - it is content time now.
Start writing everything down for your resume. This activity if done in terms of the Profile creation, will ensure that you don't forget to mention anything worthwhile.
Do let me know if you want me to cast an eye over your resume and/or profile to suggest better starting points.
Hope this helps,

Adtiya,

I am part of the MCB team - assuming you are referring to Sameer (our founder), here is the response to your queries:
  1. You already have the right names there - the 3 IIMs and ISB should be your primary (only?) targets.
  2. Given where we are, this is again a no-brainer. Always try for R1 unless any specific reason for not to do so.
  3. This one is a bit open ended. Overall, it will be important to understand the nature of your work, your post-MBA plans and other achievements. These will dictate how your candidature is evaluated. If you are trying to understand how the overall process works, read here.
Hope this helps.

Will comment below on your queries...

Other than that, I have a few things on which I'd like to seek your advice, like -

1) The colleges in India that I have a chance of getting into (IIMA, IIMB, ISB, Great Lakes are primarily in my mind). Yes these seem reasonable given your stats
2) Whether to apply in Round 1 or Round 2 of the admissions. Always R1 if your GMAT is ready- and it is, and if you have enough work- and you do, and then just if you have enough time to do a good job on the application. Try for R1
3) Preparing for the admissions process - (profile / essay / interview)

And while this article is for US schools- the process is the same- read this: https://stratusprep.com/planning-apply- ... right-now/
For essays look here: https://stratusprep.com/6-keys-successf ... ion-essay/
Also general advice is to know yourself and where you stand out. You want to emphasize key themes about yourself in the application and interview. For interviews, projecting confidence and charisma but yet still appearing humble is the goal. Yes, easier said than done.
