Sir,
I am Electrical Engineering student who has just graduated from NIT Surathkal ( tier 2 Indian college). I have worked with an Investment bank for 2 years and now wish to apply for MS in Finance. My GMAT score was 720.
My only dilemma is that I was having mental depression during my first year of UG which resulted in getting 6 arrears( F in my grade sheet). This wasn't a fault of my own rather due to my health condition. I was treated by my dad who happened to be a doctor as well. My school too got to know of it, however they maintain a strict grading policy which resulted in me getting a GPA of 7.02/10,( my math grade is particularly bad C & D). but my class rank is around 16 in a class of 39 students. The topper of my batch had a GPA of 8.76.( only 7 students got distinction)
I willing to counter these effects but I am unaware of the strategies for the same?
What would help me reach top 10 or 15 schools if i were to target for the same.
Really wanted your help on this matter......
My Admission chances ??

Hi there,
Thanks for posting. I believe your concern is about your low marks during certain years you battled depression, and how that might affect you and what to do about it.
Generally there are 3 main things you can do.... first-- score high on the GMAT. Second-- you could consider taking some additional courses that you score well in. And third-- you can use the optional essay space to explain any extenuating circumstances including health issues.
I would compare yourself against average admitted applicants (you could contact the admissions office to find out more stats on admitted Indian students and comparable ranges for example) and see what you think.
Good luck to you!

Thank you ma'am for your advise. I just had a small doubt though, as in to say that here in India we do not have community colleges for taking up extra courses. The options left with us would be to join an online course, distance course or even take up another MS. What would you recommend in this situation?

You could look into online courses, preferably at reputable US or other global universities, or do any of the regular universities in India allow people to enroll in just a few courses or no (ie does not need to be a community college?). But for best advice I'd actually reach out to the admissions office and ask them if considering a few options. Good luck!
