Light can travel through water for small distances, prevented from losing its energy as a result of density of water.

(A) prevented from losing its energy as a result of
(B) prevented from having its energy lost by
(C) its energy prevented from losing by
(D) its energy prevented from being lost as a result of
(E) preventing its energy from losing by

[spoiler]I thought Participle "ed" modifier as above modifies the closest noun. Can someone explain the correct answer A[/spoiler]

Hi Sandy,

You are correct. The answer should not be A. It should be D.

What is the source of this question? This question seems very similar to an official question. Infact we were just having a discussion about this question 1-2 days back. As you can see choice D is the correct for the official question.

"Being" is almost always incorrect in a GMAT sentence. I think answer should be C

answer should be C........similar type of question has been posted in Forum and Ashley has given a good justfication of the same.......please go through that
