Yes, It's true.
But I wanted to know are there any problems with other wrong answers if we assume that they are referring to state troopers(Except 2 which is singular)?
Thanks

Changing the meaning of the sentence is always wrong on the GMAT.I suggest you first go through the verb-modifier rules before jumping to questions..All the Best!!arashyazdiha wrote:Yes, It's true.

3 is wrong because we dont know what the Contra is talking about i.e no reference is there...
4 is wrong because the state troopers is plural and it is wrong reference....
2 is wrong because it is wordy i.e appearance is not needed here....
5 is wrong because of the usage HOWEVER
1 seems Correct but not BEST, and also gerund seeming modifying tame.....

IMO 2arashyazdiha wrote:Despite seeming tame and intelligent, the state troopers had no choice but to shoot

1) Despite seeming tame and intelligent (seeming should hv been seemingly to modify adjectives tame and intelligent)
2) Despite a tame and intelligent appearance
3) Although appearing to be tame and intelligent (wordy compared with 2)
4) Although it seemed tame and intelligent (it refers to Gorilla, changing the sentence meaning....the contrast of original sentence is lost)
5) However tame and intelligent in appearance (wordy)
Please explain your answers and in what cases the wrongs would be right.
Thanks
